Biographies

Louis P. Karol

Louis P. Karol graduated "with distinction" from George Washington University in 1980 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration (accounting with Distinction). In 1984 he received his Juris Doctor degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. In 1989 he received his L.L.M. degree in Taxation from the New York University School of Law. Mr. Karol is also a Certified Public Accountant.

Mr. Karol is licensed to practice law in New York and his application to practice law in Connecticut is pending. He is admitted to practice in the United States Tax Court.

Mr. Karol has lectured extensively on estate planning and taxation and has also authored articles for professional trade magazines.

Mr. Karol is a member of the New York State Bar Association and its Section on Trusts and Estate Law. Mr. Karol is a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is also a Board member of the Long Island Chapter of the International Association of Financial Planning, a member of a number of Charitable Giving Committees such as The American Cancer Society and Family Services Association and a member of the Nassau County Council on Estate Planning. Mr. Karol is a past Adjunct Professor at Long Island University - C.W. Post Campus. Mr. Karol is also a member of the Board of Directors of a leading Long Island publicly traded company.

Howard L. Sosnik

Howard L. Sosnik graduated from Bucknell University in 1980 with an undergraduate degree in accounting. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1984. In 1986 he received his L.L.M. degree in Taxation from the New York University School of Law. Mr. Sosnik has also passed the Certified Public Accounting examination.

Mr. Sosnik is licensed to practice law in New York, New Jersey, Florida and Georgia. He is also admitted to practice in the United States Tax Court.

Mr. Sosnik is currently President of the Board of Trustees for the Long Island Chapter of Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. He has been a member of the board since 2009.

Mr. Sosnik has lectured extensively on estate planning and taxation and has also authored tax articles for professional trade magazines. He has conducted educational seminars for attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors and teaches insurance courses for insurance professionals necessary to maintain CLE licensing. Mr. Sosnik has been a frequent guest on "Financially Yours," a radio show on WEVD-1050 AM, dealing with estate planning and business planning.

Mr. Sosnik is a member of the New York, New Jersey and Florida State Bar Associations, the New York State Bar Trusts and Estates Law Section, the Nassau County Council on Estate Planning and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, Inc.

Marc Alhonte (of counsel)

Marc Alhonte graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1975 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Philosophy. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Buffalo in 1979. He received his M.A. degree from the University of Santa Monica in1981. In 1980, he was admitted to practice law in the State of New York

Mr. Alhonte is a member of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) referrals list for elder law, the Nassau County Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association.

Brian Adelman

Brian Adelman graduated from Emory University in 1991 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1994. In June 1995 he was admitted to practice law in the State of New York. In July 1995 he was admitted to practice law in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Julie R. DeLeón

Sheryl Bergstein

Sheryl Bergstein graduated Cum Laude from Tufts University in 1989 with a degree in psychology. She received her juris doctor degree from Hofstra University School of Law in 1992.

She was admitted to practice law in the State of New York in March, 1993. She has been an associate with our law firm for over twenty-four years, concentrating her area of practice in trusts and estates and estate administration.

Michael B. Shapiro

Michael B. Shapiro graduated from Long Island University - C.W. Post in 2003 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration - Management Information Systems. He received his Juris Doctor Degree from St. John's University in 2008. In February 2009, he was admitted to practice law in the State of New York. He is also admitted to practice in the United States Tax Court. Mr. Shapiro has conducted educational seminars for accountants, financial advisors and insurance professionals on the topics of estate planning and elder law. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of a Long Island preschool that focuses on early intervention for children with disabilities.

James Asquith

James Asquith has been an associate with the firm's elder law division since February 2013 and is admitted to practice law in New York and New Jersey. James Asquith concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning, Medicaid planning and applications, guardianships, special needs planning, and estate administration. James Asquith graduated from New York Law School in 2012 and from Staffordshire University in England in 2000 with a BA (hons) in History and Politics. Prior to his career in law, James Asquith worked as a ski guide in Val d'Isere and Tignes in France and then as a ski instructor in Colorado, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Brenda M. Lynch

Brenda is an attorney working in the law firm of Karol & Sosnik's Trust and Estate Department. Her practice has focused on Estate Administration, Elder Law, Estate Planning and closely related areas from the very beginning of her legal career.

Brenda's focus is on representing fiduciaries and beneficiaries of a trust or an estate. She has over 19 years of experience advising fiduciaries (Executors and Trustees) on the duties and responsibilities of being a fiduciary. She also represents beneficiaries in ensuring that they receive the assets that they are entitled to in a timely fashion from an estate and/or trust. She also works with our Trust and Estate Litigation Department when matters cannot be resolved amicably.

Brenda earned her law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1997. She is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey. She is a member of the New York City, Nassau County and New York State Bar Associations. In addition, she is a member of the New York State Bar Association Elder Law Section's Subcommittee on Mediation. This organization focuses on alternative dispute resolution in guardianship and contested surrogate matters.

While attending law school, she interned for the Brooklyn Legal Services, Department of the Aging and Brooklyn Law School's Elder Law Clinic. She was also the recipient of an Everett Fellowship, which allowed her to work with the Samuel Sadin Institute on Law of the Brookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College.

Brenda derives a great deal of personal and professional satisfaction from working closely with seniors and their families during some of the most difficult periods of lives - the loss of a loved one. "My goal is to make the many duties involved in settling an estate as stress-free and efficient as possible for my clients."

Brenda's areas of practice include: Trust and Estate Administration, Elder Law, Special Needs and Estate Planning, Guardianship and Estate Litigation.
